Why León

León Is Not a Backdrop
León is not a backdrop for IO. It is part of the product.
We build here because the city still has the material knowledge, machinery, suppliers, and working hands that make real leather footwear possible. León is not useful to us as a romantic origin story. It is useful because the work is still alive here.
The Leather City
León, Guanajuato has been shaped by leather and shoemaking for generations. The city understands hides, soles, lasts, heels, stitching, finishing, and the practical chain of decisions that turn raw material into something wearable.
A boot is not only a silhouette. It is a negotiation between leather, pattern, machine, foot, sole, heel, structure, and wear.
Where the Old Machines Still Work
There is another reason León matters: this is where many of the old machines from the shoe industry still live.
As shoe industries in Europe and the U.S. closed, moved elsewhere, or were replaced by retail spaces and shoe-making museums, many of the machines kept moving. Some of them came to León.
Inside León workshops, these machines still cut, stitch, press, shape, sand, finish, and build. They were made for leather, pressure, repetition, and repairable construction. They are not museum pieces here. They are working tools.
Why That Matters for IO
IO is not interested in costume heritage. We are interested in construction that has internal honesty. Leather should not only appear on the outside while the inside is filled with synthetic shortcuts. Stitching should not pretend to hold something it does not hold.
Building in León lets us work closer to the people, materials, and machines that understand that difference. It allows us to make Goodyear welted boots, leather apparel, and small leather goods with a direct relationship to the workshop.
Why León
Because the city is not pretending. The leather is here. The people are here. The machinery is here. The knowledge still moves from bench to bench, hand to hand, workshop to workshop.
For IO, León is part of how the objects are made, and part of why they can be made this way at all.
